A natural way to a better pool
What salt water systems actually involves
A salt chlorinator passes pool water over a cell that splits dissolved salt into chlorine, sanitises the water, and lets it recombine back into salt. Nothing is consumed except a little salt lost to splash-out and backwashing, so instead of a chlorine spike after every dose the pool sits at a steady low level all week. Softer on skin, gentler on eyes, no bleached swimming costumes and none of that heavy chlorine smell — which, incidentally, is not chlorine at all but chloramines, the by-product an under-dosed pool produces.
The salt level is nowhere near seawater. A pool runs at roughly a tenth of the salinity of the sea, which is why most people notice the water feels softer rather than tasting salty. Converting an existing chlorine pool means fitting the chlorinator and control unit into the return line, adding the initial bags of salt, and balancing and stabilising the water while the system settles.
It is not maintenance-free, and anyone who tells you it is has not owned one. Cells scale up over time and need cleaning; output needs turning up in summer and down in winter; and pH tends to creep upward on salt pools, so it still needs testing. Cells are consumables with a finite life — but for most households the ongoing chemical spend drops and the water is simply nicer to swim in.

Salt Water Systems, answered
Does a salt water pool still contain chlorine?
Yes — it generates its own from the salt rather than having it added. The sanitising is the same; the delivery is steadier and gentler.
Will the water taste salty?
Not really. A salt pool runs at roughly a tenth of seawater salinity. Most people describe the water as feeling softer rather than tasting salty.
Can my existing pool be converted?
Almost always. It needs a chlorinator cell and control unit fitted into the return line, plus the initial salt. We quote on the pool as it stands.
Is a salt pool cheaper to run?
Ongoing chemical spend usually drops, offset against the electricity the cell uses and replacing the cell at the end of its life. Most owners come out ahead, and nearly all of them prefer the water.
